Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) made donations to three local charities thanks to proceeds from the 9th annual Beer & Chili Festival. Participating chefs and brewers compete for best chili and beer with proceeds going to the winners’ charity of choice. GSR held small ceremonies earlier this month to present the donations to each organization.
Each year, proceeds from GSR’s Beer & Chili Festival are donated to the Reno Rodeo Foundation (RRF). This year’s $2,500 donation will benefit the Foundation’s Denim Drive, providing clothing and basic essentials to children in need within the community.
In addition to the RRF, GSR has presented the winners of the “People’s Choice” and “Judge’s Choice” for Best Beer and Best Chili. Chef Griffin Akeman, representing Chickie’s & Pete’s Crab House and Sportsbar, took home the title of Best Chili for both People and Judge’s Choice. Chef Akeman selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada as his charity of choice, which received $1,000. He chose the charity due to the organization’s commitment to positively impacting the lives of children in the Northern Nevada community.
Slieve Brewing took home “People’s Choice” for Best Beer during the event and selected Sierra Kids Foundation to receive a $1,000 donation. The foundation helps provide financial support for families with autism. Since 2006, Sierra Kids Foundation has provided over $300,000 to families within the community.
The 2024 Beer & Chili festival will be held in October. Attendees can sample craft beers from more than a dozen breweries and sample chili and other menu items from local restaurants all vying for the “People’s Choice” title, a trophy and major bragging rights – plus a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choosing.
