Held on Thursday, May 14, at the heart of Nevada’s civic center, the vibrant, student-led market featured fresh produce and handmade goods grown and created through school garden and hydroponics programs. Students took on the role of business owners, marketing their products, engaging with customers and managing transactions, while putting real-world skills into action.
“Students stepped into the roles of entrepreneurs, growers and leaders,” said Ciara Byrne, CEO and co-founder of Green Our Planet. “They are not only learning essential life skills, but also gaining the confidence and experience needed to shape their futures. Bringing this event to the State Capitol highlights what’s possible when education is hands-on, engaging and connected to the real world.”
Made possible by presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, the event offered legislators, community leaders, donors and corporate partners a firsthand look at how experiential learning programs are shaping Nevada’s future by fostering confidence, leadership, business acumen and a deeper connection to healthy food and sustainability.
“This event brings our commitment to healthy communities and education to life,” said Bethany Sexton, Health Plan Leader at Kaiser Permanente Nevada. “Seeing students apply what they’ve learned in such a meaningful, hands-on way is incredibly inspiring, and we are proud to support their growth and success.”
Proceeds from the market will go directly back to participating schools to support and expand their garden and hydroponics programs, funding supplies, seeds and continued hands-on learning opportunities for students.
The Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market continues to demonstrate how programs like these can support Nevada’s goals around education, health, workforce readiness and community resilience, while empowering the next generation of innovators and changemakers.
