Observed annually on May 29, 529 Day is a national reminder of the power of college savings plans and the importance of planning early for higher education. With the cost of college continuing to climb nationwide, a 529 account remains one of the most powerful and flexible tools families have to save and invest for future education costs.
“Roughly 30 years ago, the Nevada Treasury made a commitment to help Nevada families invest in their children’s futures, and that commitment has never been stronger,” said Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine. “529 Day is our opportunity to remind every family at any stage that the best time to start saving is today. We’re proud to serve Nevadans with accessible, flexible tools to make college more attainable for all.”
To honor the national holiday, the Nevada Treasury will distribute gift baskets to families across northern and southern Nevada whose babies are born on May 29, 2026. Each basket will include a $529 gift certificate for a Nevada 529 college savings account, helping set newborns on a path toward a brighter future from their very first day.

“The earlier families begin saving, the more their investments can grow over time, turning small contributions into significant savings down the road,” said Dr. Tya Mathis-Coleman, Deputy Treasurer for College Savings. “Whether your child is a newborn or already in the middle of their educational journey, we hope to see Nevadans at one of our events because it’s never too early to start planning for their future.”
The Nevada Treasury offers a variety of flexible 529 college savings plans that allow savings to grow on a tax-deferred basis, with tax-free withdrawals when used for qualified education expenses, such as tuition, fees, books or student loan payments. Funds can be used at eligible schools nationwide, including community colleges, universities or trade schools, giving families options across a wide range of educational pathways.
