LAS VEGAS (May 2026) – In honor of National Mental Health Awareness Month and final exam week, Play Playground and Hope Means Nevada (HMN), the community-based nonprofit focused on eliminating youth suicide across Nevada, are joining forces to host a free study break for local teens. On Tuesday, May 19 from 4 to 6 p.m., youth ages 13 to 18 are invited to unplug, de-stress and enjoy two hours of complimentary gameplay at Play Playground.
In addition, anyone who purchases a general admission Play Pass during the event for future use will have 20% of their purchase price donated to HMN. Play Passes are valid for 12 months following the purchase date.
The initiative highlights the importance of healthy outlets for stress relief and emotional well-being, especially among teens navigating the challenges of adolescence. With more than 20 larger-than-life games and physical activities that encourage laughter, movement and connection, Play Playground provides a dynamic space where teens can unwind and hang together in a screen-free environment.
Cited in Mental Health America’s 2025 report, which looks at 2024 national data and 2022/2023 state data, Nevada’s youth face the highest prevalence of mental health challenges in the nation. The report noted 22.6% of adolescents in Nevada experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for mental health breaks and stress reduction activities.
According to research conducted by Western University, play allows individuals to momentarily step outside of their daily pressures and responsibilities, creating a psychological space where they can relax and recharge. Engaging in playful activities, especially those that involve laughter and physical activity, triggers the release of endorphins, the brain’s natural mood boosters. These chemicals help reduce stress and elevate feelings of happiness. Additionally, according to Oxford University Press, engaging in play can also lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and combat feelings of overwhelm.
“It’s always been a part of the mission of Play Playground to create spaces where people can have real-life interaction, conversation and connection,” said Phil Royle, chief executive officer, Play Playground. “For younger people at the end of their school year working through the stress of final exam week, spaces like Play Playground are essential. This study break event is about letting teens balance academic pressure while still experiencing the joy of their formative years.”
Added Janna Velasco, executive director, Hope Means Nevada, “The data around youth mental health in Nevada makes it clear we need more accessible, everyday solutions that help teens cope in real time. Play offers a powerful way to interrupt stress, build connection and support emotional well-being. By partnering on this initiative with Play Playground, we’re meeting teens where they are and giving them a healthy outlet when they need it most.”
Play Playground is located on the Atrium Level at the Luxor Hotel and Casino at 3900 S Las Vegas Blvd. Advanced registration is encouraged. To sign up, click here. A valid student I.D. for teens ages 13-18 must be presented upon arrival. Teens must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. For more information on Play Playground, visit playplayground.com.
