Reno, Nev. (July 21, 2025) – Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN), in partnership with Washoe County, announced today that it will expand its volunteer management responsibilities in support of the Cares Campus Dining Room.
Effective August 4, 2025, CCNN will extend its volunteer-supported lunch program to serve residents of the Cares Campus directly, building upon its existing role in overseeing volunteers for the nightly dinner service. This expansion underscores CCNN’s commitment to supporting the community’s most vulnerable residents.
“Catholic Charities has been delivering packaged hot, nutritious meals, prepared in our St. Vincent’s Dining Room, to the Cares Campus since June 2021,” said Marie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. “With the opening of the new dining facility, we are now able to serve cafeteria-style meals for both lunch and dinner directly to the residents seven days a week, 365 days a year. It’s been a long journey, but we are very happy to be pivoting away from handing out meals in containers to being able to personally serve those in need. It’s a very uplifting experience for the residents and the volunteers.”
After donating nearly 2 million meals to the residents of the Cares Campus, this July, CCNN received funding from Washoe County to purchase ingredients helping to off-set the high cost of fruits, vegetables and proteins and to underwrite the organization’s staff members who directly prepare and support the Cares Campus meal program. CCNN continues to provide a cafeteria-style meal in its St. Vincent’s Dining Room on Valley Road for those experiencing food insecurity that are not residents of the Washoe County shelter system.
CCNN is seeking volunteers to help serve lunch and dinner at the Care Campus, which provides meals 365 days per year to those in need. Five to six volunteers are needed daily from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and again from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and must be 18 years of age or older. This opportunity is open to individuals, businesses or groups to commit to weekly or monthly service as well as for those who can only volunteer as their schedule allows.
“This volunteer opportunity is perfect for ministry groups, business, civic and social organizations and human services organizations and agencies,” said Lisa Ross, community relations officer.
Lunch service in the St. Vincent’s Dining Room continues daily from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
