RENO, Nev. (November 2, 2022) – Eye Care Professionals, an ophthalmology practice in northern Nevada, is now offering the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens® (LAL) to cataract patients eligible for the corrective vision solution. LAL lenses, created by RXSight, are the only intraocular lens implant that can be customized to each patient after cataract surgery through proprietary ultraviolet light treatments. While this is the first-of-its-kind lens to help cataract patients in this way, it is also the first of-its-kind lens that can be physically altered once implanted to improve patient outcomes.
Cataracts form when proteins and fibers of the eye’s natural lens begin to degrade and break down optical clarity, which can cause hazy and cloudy vision. Cataracts then continue to worsen until the point at which surgery is necessary for improved vision. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss worldwide and according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), an estimated 50% of Americans will have developed cataracts by the age of 75. Some patients begin developing cataracts as early as 40. The LAL lens reacts to targeted, ultraviolet light treatments post-surgery, physically reshaping the lens by rearranging special molecules within the lens material, so that doctors and patients can get closer to achieving 20/20 vision.
“Eye Care Professionals is proud to offer such patient-centric technology, especially as these lenses help individuals regain even more autonomy in their day-to-day lives through more precise vision post-cataract surgery,” said Dr. Matthew Mills, owner and primary ophthalmologist. “This revolutionary lens helps us customize patients’ vision post-surgery, something we have not been able to do up until now.”
A study conducted by RxSight indicated that patients who received the LAL and post-surgery treatments were two times more likely to achieve 20/20 vision when compared to those patients who received standard lens implants.
“As the ophthalmology needs of patients in Nevada continue to grow, we are proud to offer the most current technologies and products that improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients,” said Dr. Mills. “Our team looks forward to hearing how these lenses improve life’s daily activities on behalf of our clients.”
Dr. Matthew Mills, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and received his M.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.
