“He’s like a father to us.” That’s the feeling of several students and Best Buddies youth at Green Valley High School about teacher and Best Buddies advisor Phil Postier. It is this sentiment and dedication for the nonprofit organization’s school chapter and kids that led to his nomination and win for the Move 4 Less Community Smiles Nominations for December.
The Community Smiles appreciation program was created by Move 4 Less to honor local everyday heroes who make people smile by their actions or deeds. For Postier’s win, Move 4 Less representatives presented him with a $1,000 Visa gift card and other goodies during a surprise recognition ceremony at the school in front of his students and school staff and Best Buddies youth and representatives.
Best Buddies high school chapters foster one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and provide leadership development and skill building. In addition to his relationship with students, Postier has grown the chapter with the most local membership applications and excelled in fundraising, all in his first year with the nonprofit.
“Phil has done such a great job this year with the Green Valley High School Best Buddies chapter. He has a special connection with all of his students and takes a personal interest in their success in and out of the classroom,” said Michele Vogan, deputy director of programs and operations for Best Buddies Nevada, of her nomination of Postier. “Also thank you to Move for Less for providing this recognition opportunity for people in our community.”
Postier received the most nominations in December from people who answered the question, “Why does this person make you and/or our community smile?”
“We think it’s important to recognize those who do kind deeds and make people happy, especially when they least expect it,” said Maggie Kolesar, general sales manager for Move 4 Less. “Phil Postier is a great example of an everyday hero, who not only makes people smile but makes our community a better place to live.”
The Community Smiles Nominations is an extension of the Move 4 Less tagline, “Smile! It’s Moving Day!,” and the local moving company’s efforts to move customers as easily and stress-free as possible as they start anew in their new home or office. The program was applicable for November, December and January.
