How did you get into your profession?
When I graduated from school with a business degree the jobs available were public accounting, banking and insurance, and banking sounded the most appealing.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?
Volunteer for every assignment, get on every non-profit and charity board, and become very involved in your community.
What is an issue currently facing your industry that an outside observer might not be aware of?
The banking industry has stopped many of their management training programs so there is a shortage of management talent coming up in the ranks of banking and lending.
If you were going to teach a college course, what would you teach? Why?
I would teach money and banking. I think that my impression of kids who are in college is that they do not have adequate personal financial skills, and they do not understand how an economy really works.
What is the best moment of your career?
When I was president and CEO of a small local bank, and in two years we were given an award for best performing bank in the country for our peer group.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
“Honest to A Fault”
What workplace event or project are you looking forward to?
I always enjoy the end-of-the-year holiday party each year because we hand out bonus checks, and I enjoy doing that.
What is an assumption people make about you that is dead wrong?
That I do not have a sense of humor, but in fact I have a great sense of humor.
