The College of Southern Nevada will host the Mental Health 360 Conference: Knowledge, Self-Care & Transformation April 14 on its North Las Vegas Campus. The free, daylong event is open to the community at large.
The conference will bring together leading mental health scholars, clinicians, advocates and students to raise awareness about mental health warning signs and share advice that supports treatment options for people living with mental health afflictions.
Psychologist Dr. Sheldon Jacobs will be the keynote speaker. Jacobs is an author, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and a regional media consultant on mental health topics. He is also the vice president for the National Alliance on Mental Illness–Southern Nevada and is a member of NAMI’s national board of directors.
The conference will feature three hourlong workshops, each consisting of five tracks:
Crisis & Trauma: Get prepared to identify, resolve and share resources for long-term support to avoid remaining in a crisis state.
Diagnosis & Treatment: Learn about mind-body, holistic approaches for treating anxiety or depression.
Student Needs: Discussion of students’ transition from a highly structured high school environment to an independent college environment, where they experience a variety of emotions.
Legal Concerns: Presenters will share how the state of college students’ mental health may give rise to a wide range of legal issues.
Diversity in Mental Health: Discussion of diversity and inclusion needs, efforts and successes in mental health treatment by engaging Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color (BIPOC) and/or LGBTQ+ participants and their allies.
In addition to community attendance, CSN is seeking healthcare-related vendor participation. Registration as an audience member or vendor is required and can be completed at csn.edu/mentalhealth360. Audience participation is limited to the first 200 registrants. The deadline for vendor registration is Feb. 15.
The conference is through the Nevada System of Higher Education via a $2.6 million federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant supports systemwide NSHE pilot initiatives that advance mental health awareness and services between Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023.
