Political polarization is peaking online and in communities across Las Vegas as election season nears.
Several political campaign signs in the Henderson area have been vandalized by what appears to be yellow paint from a paintball gun. The signs vandalized were primarily from non-Republican signs.
David Kohlmeier, also known as ‘The Problem Solver’ from his popular podcast “The Problem Solver Show” on Yurview, has offered a reward of $5000 for the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the crime.
“It is unfortunate that these crimes have occurred and they must stop,” Kohlmeier states decrying an atypically high number of vandalism calls. “Destruction of political campaign signs is not likely to affect the outcome of the election; however, the lack of civility and disrespect involved in these crimes is a degradation of our community values.”
States take slightly different approaches to how they penalize theft and vandalism of political yard signs, but most states treat the conduct as a misdemeanor. Even though misdemeanors are minor offenses, they do carry serious consequences that can multiply based on the number of signs involved.
Misdemeanors often carry up to a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days or even a year in jail.
“I have found that in the past when we have offered a reward for crimes in Las Vegas, we sometimes get tips that lead to an arrest and conviction. The Problem Solver wants to step up on behalf of our community and do our part to keep vandalism out of it. People have the right to freedom of speech, but not to destroy property”says Kohlmeier.
David Kolmeier is a retired police officer that hosts a popular podcast known as The ProblemSolver. He served 17 years for the Henderson Police Dept and the NYPD patrolling the streets. David specialized in Community Policing, taught the DARE and DREAMS programs and worked with homeless camps.
